Recipe Week: Day 2

Today is going to be one of my NON-food recipes.  Although it has all ingredients that are actually editable.  This is not THE thing I was talking about that has changed my life but it is certainly another one to add to the list of things to change me.  My recipe for today is HOMEMADE DEODORANT!

Okay so I know what you are thinking?  Why make deodorant when you can buy it in the store?  Do you know how bad deodorant is for you?  Seriously, look it up.  I sweat like a pig.  It's gross so I NEED deodorant.  I need a antiperspirant.    They are so harmful to your body.  What to do?  Why not make your own?  I bet you think it's going to be super complicated with lots of weird expensive ingredients.

WRONG

It has 3 ingredients.  Two are things MOST people have on hand.  One I had to order on line but if you have a natural food isle at your local grocery store, I bet you can find it there.  So how about that recipe.  I have read at least 20 different recipe for deodorant.  They are all the same except the amounts of ingredients vary.  The other thing that varies is what you add to it for smell.  I didn't add a scent because I HATE when deodorant has a scent.  I always buy powder fresh.  One time I bought a vanilla scented on and thought I was gonna die from migraine overload by the end of two days.  I gave it to my mom.  She said she uses it sometimes when she is just going to be laying around the house not doing anything.  haha

Okay

1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup corn starch
4 to 6 tablespoons of coconut oil ( organic cold pressed )

mix the two dry ingredients together and then add in the cocnut oil until you get a good mixture.  Don't put in too much of the coconut oil or it might be too greasy and wet.  It should look like real deodorant.

How do you apply it?

A lot of people who make their own empty out an old deodorant container and use it.  This would work really well.  I had JUST bought mine and just in case the one I made didn't work on me I wanted to keep it.  Heehee   I went to Dollar Tree and bought a ten pack of these little round containers.  I was able to fill three of them.  One for me, one for my two sisters.

Some tips and Tricks I read about:
You can add any scent to this you want.  Lots suggested lavender but it gives me a headache.
It smells lightly of coconut even without adding any scent.
Some people add teatree oil because it has antibacterial properties.  I did not because my arm pits get irritated easily.  Tea tree oil cause be a skin irritant if you use it every day.  YOu might want to make two batches of deodorant and do one WITH the tea tree oil and one without and just use it sometimes.
Coconut oil melts at 76 degrees.  If you have a warm house you might want to keep it in a cool place or one person I read actually keeps hers in the refrigerator.  She said then it feels nice and refreshing when putting it on.  To each his own
And lastly ( this tip I LOVE )  make an extra container with just corn starch and baking soda.  After you apply the deodorant to your under arms ( I just use my finger ) take the powder mixture and a blush brush ( I just use a cotton ball ) and dab the powder mix onto your underarms.  It helps keep you dry.

And that is it folks.  Try it.  SO far I am feeling good and it has been 4 or 5 days.  My husband keeps making fun of me and saying things like, "What's the musky smell?"  Or "Man you smell like BO" but I swear I am fresh as a daisy and I don't smell at all.  A couple of days I had to re-apply at night but I do that with regular deodorant too. Remember at the beginning I said I sweat like a pig!   I also read when researching this that it takes a while for your body to get used to it.  So I am guessing in a couple of weeks I won't need to re-apply. Glad I started using to now while it is still cool outside.  By the time it heats up and getting hot I should be good!

ENJOY and please try it!  Rid yourself of the extra toxic crap we put into our bodies!  Your body will thank you!!!

This sounds like a really good idea. All anti-perspirants contain aluminum, and research is trying to link that to Alzheimers, so it's a great idea to find a different solution that doesn't contain metals our body absorbs. I'll give it a try!

Still waiting to find out what has changed your life...

Thanks for the recipe. I don't know if I will try it. I used to use the salt one then went back to regular stuff.

You KNOW I have to comment on this post! Katie told me about this last year. I made it and LOVE it! She's right - no stinky.

It's my favorite all-natural switch so far.

As she stated, Katie made some for her two sisters. I am one of those sisters, and both myself and her other sister Kim love this stuff...especially when you do what Katie said and dust after with just the baking soda and corn starch mixture.
