Yikes!

Any one else a total slob like me?  I am especially so when it comes to my sewing and craft stuff.  I think it is due to the frequency at which I use them.  You know what I mean?!   I can't wait until we get a new house and I have a creative space that is mine that I don't have to clean if I don't want to.  For now I am stuck with the kitchen and my crap is every where!  Here is what I decided to do to help the clutter.

The blog the Little Green Bean takes foam board ( which you can get at the dollar store for...well, a dollar! haha ) and cuts them up into 8 pieces and then wraps the fabric around it to store.  Um hello awesome!  I am in the process and my material already looks SOOOOOOOOOO much better.  I'll post pictures when I get more done but trust me if you have tons of fabric and you hate digging through it every time you need to make something check out the above blog post and consider doing yourself a favor!  It's super easy, super cheap ( which you gotta love ) and totally doable in a reasonable amount of time.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Handmade gift exchange

I know I have already talked about this but I got my present this week from the home made gift exchange.  We were supposed to have them mailed out on the 24th of June.  My partner had gotten hurt and spent some time in the hospital and then I left to go to Utah so I told her to just not worry about it and send it when I got back.  She was also getting ready to leave to go to Utah as well.  I got it in the mail Monday  YIPEE!  Here is a picture of what I got.

I told her I liked vintage stuff.

Love the black flower!

Perfect spot for one of my business cards!  ;)   haha  Actually I wanted to use a picture of my husband and I but I couldn't find one at the time.

I didn't even tell her that I was a photographer and she put a camera on it!  How perfect is that?!  Now I just need to figure out where to put it.

My crafter was Dee from La-dee-da creations.  She just opened up an etsy shop here and she is part of an organization in Arizona called love-create-shine-change   Click on the link to see what it is about!  Or just go check out her blog for all her crafty goodness! http://ladeedacreations.com/

THANKS AGAIN DEE

Do You Remember?

Do you remember back in May or June when I blogged about a camera bag I REALLY wanted but they were out of stock in the color I wanted? WELL, they have the color in stock again! I have been debating on buying it or not. I HATE spending large amounts of money on one single item. Last month I bought my new backdrops and I haven't regretted that yet! I got great pictures of my sister and her little family. Check out my cute nephew

Here he is with his daddy sporting one of the bow ties I made him!

So I LOVE my backdrops!  I haven't used all of them yet so I still need to get some bodies over to my house so I can try out some more.  And now I am debating on buying the bag.  BUT WAIT!  Over at sew.craft.create.  She is giving one of these camera bags away that I want!  I am sure I will not win because I just am NOT That person who wins things ever BUT I am blogging about the giveaway any ways.  Today is the last day to enter so go on over and enter because you never know when you might win something!  And even if you don't win the blog itself is SUPER cute and you might get some new great ideas!

Since I am showing you pictures from my little photo shoot wanna see some more?  Check out my cutie pie Kayla girl

And the BEST picture I could get of the two of them

And then my boy!  The first picture I posed.  THEN he decided to pose himself...

LOVE this one!  haha

And if you knew my boy you would know him this picture describes him to a T!

Don't forget to go over to the giveaway and enter for your chance to win a camera bag!

Subway Art

Subway art is SOOOOO popular right now!  I love the graphics involved.  I love putting words on pictures.  If you have followed my blog for a while you know I have a printer that prints on canvas and it prints HUGE!  I LOVE IT!  I have pictures of my kids with a famous religious song on them.  My son's picture has the first verse of the Mormon primary song, "I AM A Child Of God." and then my girls picture has the Chorus of that song on it and I hung them right next to each other.  I love them and I always get compliments when people come over to my house.

Well, last week I was looking through all of the people who linked up projects over at Sew Much Ado .  I saw this

SUBWAY ART

And I really liked how it had the red hearts mixed with the black wording.  I have been wanting to try one of these. Later on that day was church.  I was sitting during the last hour listening to this wonderful lesson about how we must make Christ the center of our families and something clicked!  Before I went to bed that night I went to Pic Nik.com and started working on my own.  I made the word CHRIST the center of the collage and then tried to do anything pertaining to family all around it.  Funny thing is, it looks A LOT like the collage I had found.  Apparently she made it at Pic nik too because the hearts are exactly the same.

ANY WAYS.  I printed it out and was going to frame it.  I got a couple of frames out and it was too big for ALL of the 8X10 frames I had.  Isn't it frustrating that most frames that say 8X10 are actually a little smaller?!  SOOOOO I am going to have to find another frame but until then here is he collage I made

Hopefully I can find a frame so I don't have to try and shrink it slightly.  What a pain that will be!  :)
Oh and just so I don't seem like a COMPLETE copy cat I didn't steal her words.  Even the XOXO I swear I used for a reason.  I signed pretty much every letter, email anything with XOXO so I swear it was ME.  haha  Enjoy your Saturday Y'all!

Brazilian Cheese Rolls {Pao de Queijo}

My husband went on a mission for our church in Brazil.  He loves Brazilian food!  The Brazilian BBQ places are SOOOOOO expensive.   I have never gone to one with him, he usually goes by himself.  My brother in law Ender also went to Brazil on his mission, therefore my sister tries to find different Brazilian dishes to make them and then I get to hear which ones are good.  The other day we made Brazilian style steaks.  SUPER easy.  You take your steak and you rub kosher salt ( or any salt you have ) all over it.  Then you drizzle olive oil on it and rub smashed up garlic on it.  Let it marinate for a couple of hours and then grill it.

My husband said that when they would do this in Brazil they would use rock salt and after it was cooked you would gently knock the salt right off of it before you ate it.  I thought this way was good.  My husband just ordered a grill and is SO excited to try this again so we can actually grill it.  We used our tiny little Foreman grill. hee hee

NOW for the WOW recipe.  I didn't take pictures because I was making these in a hurry last night but if you like cheese bread you have to try these.  It's called  Pao de Queijo or you can just say Brazilian Cheese Rolls.  They are SO yummy.  You have to use the ingredients provided though.  Substitutions don't cut it!  You HAVE to use tapioca flour and you HAVE to use canola oil.  My sister used vegetable oil once and they were almost un editable.  So be careful and have fun.  These are super easy and super yummy.  Another MUST do is you have to cook these in a mini muffin tin.  No exceptions.  I got the recipe off of Our Best Bites.  GREAT blog people with tons of ideas and recipes.

Quick Brazilian Cheese Rolls {Pao de Queijo} – Gluten Free!
Recipe by Our Best Bites
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup canola oil
1 cup tapioca flour (sometimes labeled tapioca starch) no substitutions
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/4 C grated cheddar cheese* (preferably medium or sharp)
1/4 C grated Parmesan cheese
*you can play around with the cheese.  I’ve used Monterey Jack, low-moisture mozarella, swiss, and even gruyere in place of the cheddar.  All great!
Optional:  extra cheese to sprinkle on top and any herbs/flavorings you’d like to add.  Try rosemary and or garlic powder, my favorites!
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Place egg, milk, oil, tapioca flour, and salt in blender and blend until smooth.  Add cheeses and pulse 2 times.  Immediately pour batter into a mini muffin tin (if your muffin tin isn’t non-stick, spray lightly with non-stick spray first), filling each well about 3/4 full, or just slightly less.  If desired (and I recommend), sprinkle a bit of parmesan cheese on top and/or a tiny sprinkle of kosher salt.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until puffed and golden.  Remove from oven and cool for a few minutes before removing rolls from pan.  Serve warm. {Que Gostoso!}  These actually don’t re-heat well so I recommend making and eating fresh.

If you want to see their whole post with pictures and all check it out HERE
You will not be disappointed if you make these!  They are soft and gooey on the inside and crunchy on the outside.  It's fabulous!

Sleep Mask

I got lasik.  Most of you know this and I don't want to keep bringing it up.  BUT my eyes have been so dry which is a side effect of having it done.  I have recently figured out that I am one of those people who don't always close their eyes all of the way when they sleep.  Creepy, I know.  So when I wake in the morning sometimes I have a dry spot on my left eye that takes TONS of eye drops and a couple of hours to go away.  It's annoying because the dry spot  causes some blurriness in that eye.  It's VERY annoying.  Any ways.  I wondered if wearing a sleep mask would help.  My sister and her husband use them and love them so why not try right?  I found a tutorial ( you don't REALLY need a tutorial but I like at least finding one that has a template you can print out )  I found it at Prudent Baby.  If you have never checked out their site I LOVE IT!  They have awesome stuff on it.

The original tutorial I read used regular fabric on top and minkie for the inside.  I used minkie on both.  Also, it says to use dark fabric because that's the whole point is to have the room dark.  I used this light fabric plus I didn't use interfacing and it still seemed pretty dark.  The point for me was not to have the room dark though, it was to cover my eyes from the air.  The first night was great!  I slept better which was SO nice.  It gets light by like 5:30 here and it's so annoying.  My eyes, however, were SUPER dry! BOOOOOO  I figured I would try again last night but I had one of those nights where I just COULD NOT SLEEP!  Half way through the night I took it off.  I will try again tonight and see what happens.  I think it turned out really cute though.  I was looking at some on etsy.  People on etsy make me laugh!  Some people are charging like 18 to 20 dollars for these. Um, it took me TEN MINUTES TOPS!  That includes cutting out the template, cutting out my fabric...everything.  I would say 20 bucks is for sure over kill.  :)

here's the LINK

I have a really cute idea to make some of these for my sister and brother in law.  I hope it is something I follow through with because I really think it would be super cute!

My mom and dad are on their way to my house.  It takes them 5 or 6 hours but I can't wait to see them.  the kids are super excited.  They will be here until Thursday morning so it's a quick trip.  I probably won't post again until then.  So have a great few days!  I know I will.

Crackers

I went CRACKER CRAZY this weekend!  I needed to bring a snack to church for the nursery and instead of bringing store bought graham crackers or fishy crackers, I decided to try and make some.  On my search to find other graham crackers recipes I read a lot of different things.  This led me to find other crackers recipes and go a little crazy.  I ended up making graham crackers, "ritz" crackers and fishy crackers.  The fishy crackers were good but not EXCELLENT.  Part of that was my fault.  I only had low fat cheddar because of my south beach diet and so it was as cheesy tasting as they should be.  The good thing though is that is recipe has spinach and carrots in them and I SWEAR you can NOT taste them.  This makes them perfect for picky kids who don't eat veggies.  The dough is really simple.  You basically put everything in the food processor.  Then you chill the dough for a couple of hours, roll out and cut out the fishy.  This part is tricky.  I wanted them to look like fishy crackers so I had to make a cookie cutter.  I cut open a soda can to shape myself a fishy.  It took three tries because I kept breaking the aluminum.  :)  By the way, NONE of this was my idea!  I stole it all from the source I found the recipe.  I will post a link at the bottom of this post so you can check it out.  The only modification I did was I added some pepper jack cheese which I wish I would have added more of because I couldn't taste it.  So here is my pictures!

LINK HERE  Get the recipe by clicking on the link.  Also I did two batches of these puppies and the first batch I thought I over cooked.  So the next batch I took out sooner.  The "over cooked" ones ended up having the crunch you want in a crackers and the others ones were more like bread dough.  The crunchy ones were better!

Now for the ritz crackers.  I messed this up because the dough is SUPER springy!  I didn't roll mine out thin enough.  It was HARD to get it thin.  Then they also cooked up in the oven which I didn't think they were going to do.  SOOOO the ones that came out thin were good and did have some crunch to them.  The thick ones taste more like biscuits  which are still really yummy, but aren't ritz cracker like.  So make sure you roll them out REALLy thin when you cut them out.  I just used something round and then poked holes in them with a tooth pick.  I didn't take pictures of these but they are worth a try.  Here is the recipe for those RITZ RECIPE  ( awesome blog if you just poke around on here site.  She also has a fishy cracker one with no carrot or spinach in it if you are scared to try that! )

And lastly was the graham crackers.  I made these before and thought they were very good but I wished they had a little more flavor to them.  The recipe is found HERE  After reading several other recipes I changed a couple of things in this recipe.  I did half white sugar and half brown sugar.  Plus I let my 1/4 tsp of cinnamon turn more into a 1/2 tsp.  I also added a few dashes of pumpkin pie spice!  YUM!  That's it.  I think they were for sure more flavorful.  Still not perfect for my tasting but much better.  I like things sweet though so for those who don't like things sweet you probably want to stick with the original recipe.   So go try some cracker recipes.

On a side note I ALWAYS try and give you guys a link if I got an idea from someone else.  Even if I changed the recipe like in the above crackers.  Please let me know if you feel I took something from you and didn't give you any credit.  I HATE when others do that to me so don't let me do it to you!  Thanks. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Earth Day

HAHAHAHAHA  Here IW as thinking Earth Day was sometime in March and about a week and a half ago I looked it up on the internet only to find out it is in April.  Boy was my face red.  This is why there has been a SERIOUS lack of Green post for the last two weeks.  Earth Day is actually on April 22nd.  It should be easy for me to remember from now on since it is the day before my mom's birthday.  I am excited for April to come because I have been looking up recipes for all kinds of things for y'all.  I am excited to be sharing them.  I have not tested all of them.  With all of the things out there I do not have enough TIME or MONEY to test everything.  Anyone interested in tested out a formula I find and then doing a guest blog post?  Let me know.

In the mean time, I have been loving my deodorant still!  It's wonderful and my arm pits have been SO soft.  I ALWAYS have ingrown hairs in the area.  Gross I know, but every since I started the home made regimen I have only had maybe 3 the whole month.  Usually I have 3 in a week.  No wonder too since I have been trying to find new uses for my left over coconut oil.  I have discovered that it is a GREAT moisturizer.  If you bought some to make the home made deodorant and were wondering what to do with yours, start rubbing it on your face once or twice a week after you wash it.  It soaks in wonderfully and does NOT leave an oily mess on your face.  It also smells wonderfully yummy.  There are so many uses for coconut oil that I think I might post one for everyday in April.  I am sure there are that many uses for it.

Another thing I have in mind is for a give away the on Earth day!  I have some really cute green bags that will fit in any purse that I bought two sets of on sale for REALLY cheap from Avon.  I have been wanting to do a give away but wanted to wait until the appropriate occasion and I think Earth day is perfect!  I am also going to throw in some home made deodorant and some home made chap stick.  Maybe I'll have one or two more home made items to throw in by then as well.  So stay tuned and be on the look out come April first for some great tips, tricks and recipe for GOING GREEN!

My birthday is April 6th and to help with all the green things I wanted to do during that month here on the blog I told my husband I wanted a book for my birthday.  My sister bought the book loved it and then bought it for my other sister.  I was originally going to buy it for myself and put it off and never did it.   NOW I ordered it from Amazon and I can't wait to get it!  I know it is filled with awesome suggestions and recipes.  It is also a fun read and not super boring as I read some of my sisters when she first bought it.  The book is called GORGEOUSLY GREEN by Sophie Uliano  Check out here web site HERE .  I am going to be checking it out later.

Hope everyone has a great Friday!  I was so happy last week to FINALLY sell my first thing on etsy.com  TODAY, I sold my second thing.  WOO HOO  It happens to be one of my favorite hair clips I have made.  I am glad someone will get to enjoy it and it is not just sitting here at my house any more.  HAPPY WEEKEND EVERYONE!  I know I am having a good one.  I get to do a photo shoot for some dear friends this weekend before my friend Jason gets shipped off to Iraq for a long time.  I'll share some pictures on Monday.  Until then, I am praying for no rain.

Recently

ON Sunday ( I know it's Thursday, I guess I'm just THAT slow this week! ) I was feature over at Not So Homemade  She was SO nice!  Go check it out over here.  ALSO she just reached 500 followers and is doing a week of give aways!  She dabbles in blog design and one of her give aways is for a blog make over!  WOO HOO  I TOTALLY need that!  So go check that out as well HERE

How is everyone's week going?  I tried to wash some towels yesterday and when I opened up the washer to put them in the dryer it smelled like mildew.  YUCK!   So now I have the task of cleaning the inside of my front loader.  Have I mentioned that I HATE cleaning pretty much anything.  I got online and read some great tips.  One thing I always MEAN to do but always forget is to leave the door opened after I wash clothes so it can dry out.  I also read you should leave the soap tray slightly ajar too!  Never thought of that one.  SO now I get to get on my hands and knees in the cold garage and scrub the inside of the rim and all the gross cracks and crevasses.  Can you tell I am SUPER excited about it.....

I'll let you know how it goes.  It needed to be done yesterday or the day before that or the year before that....

Recipe Week: Day 6

Okay y'all.  Today is a good recipe day.  I just tried this recipe and need to make an adjustment for the next time.  This is a recipe that you can do a lot with and chances are you never even though of making it.  It's chap stick.  :)

I read this recipe on my friend Sarah's blog ( lot's of good stuff on there so check it out )

Chocolate Orange Lip Balm

3-4 Tablespoons Cocoa Butter
3-10 Chocolate Chips
½ tsp Vitamin E Oil
¼ tsp Orange Extract

Melt the cocoa butter in the microwave until it’s a liquid. Measure 3-4 tablespoons into a microwaveable (preferably pourable) cup. I used a pyrex measuring cup.
Add the chocolate chips and stir to melt.  You may have to microwave the mixture again for the chips to fully melt. Add vitamin E oil and orange extract. Stir to combine and pour mixture into lip balm container(s).
Place in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to firm.
I got a little crafty with this old chapstick container. If you do this, make sure to put the container in the freezer for a few minutes before you fill it with hot, melty lip balm. Otherwise, it will leak a little until it firms.

I tried this recipe but I modified it.  I am a bigger white chocolate person then regular chocolate. I also am not a huge orange person.  SO I used white chocolate and almond flavoring.  I also put a little too much of the vitamin E in it so mine is very oily.  I am going to order some empty chap stick containers.  You can go HERE and find them really cheap.  My dad is a chocoholic and he is also addicted to chap stick.  I told him I would make him some.  I need to get some chocolate so I can make it.

There are many other versions of chap stick out there.  If you look for your own don't use the ones that are a petroleum based.   The reason being is because it is harmful to you.  If you have never heard of that before look it up.  Here is another one

HERE

Check out that web site because she has ALL kinds of cool stuff.

There were several I found that call for honey but a lot of people say they have problems with it separating so I choose not to try one.  All in all this is a great chance for us for lots of opportunities for riding ourselves of more toxic crap, making things for cheaper, and something that can be made and used as presents that I know MOST people will enjoy.  Who doesn't like chap stick.  On the one blog above she has a recipe for hand made lotion too and I can't WAIT to try that one.  I have to order some stuff before I can because I don't have everything I need for it.  It feels really great to know that you can have some control over what you put into your body and what a difference it can make for your wallet as well.

AWESOME

Blogging is so much fun! I just love it. I love getting to "meet" new people and make new friends and get all sorts of ideas for sewing, crafting, organizing, cleaning, cooking and even spiritual guidance. I MUST love blogging since I have THREE BLOGS! I'm a blog whore, what can I say. I have a family one where I post lots of pictures and stories and things all from our family life. Then I have a photography one for pictures so I don't bore people who don't want to look through 25 pictures in a row of the sunset! haha And lastly, this one for everything else. Ironically, I started this one because I wanted somewhere to bitch and moan about things that I didn't feel right about posting on our FAMILY blog. Then the more I got into sewing, I decided it was probably annoying for those wanting to keep up with the family and had to read through post after post about all the purses I was making. This has kind of turned into my sewing/crafting blog but it is actually supposed to be a place for me to come and put anything related to ME! That is why I named it, Something About Katie.

Any ways, I am honored when really talented people with 300 plus followers find my blog worth reading. Staci over at Just Sew Sassy has feature my scripture case and now has given me a blog award! YEAH! How fun is that?! I am honored to receive it and happy to pass it along to others.

The rules of this award are simple:

1. Thank the person for the award
2. Sum up your blogging philosophy, motivation, and experience using five (5) words.
3. Pass it on to 10 other blogs which you feel have real substance.

Thank you Staci! I appreciate it mucho! And 5 words to sum up blogging for me....

motivational, learning, FUN, uplifting and Hard-work!

I do not know if I can name 10 blogs because I only follow so many and most of the ones I follow and hugely popular ones but I will give it a try.

1. Sugar Bananas
2. Home Grown Style
3. Sometimes Creative
4. Make It Perfect
5. TinySeamstree
6. Sanity Is Overrated ( Hilarious blog )
7. My Owl Barn
8. House of Sagar
9. 3 Four and Under
10. Patchwork Possibilities

YEAH I DID TEN! WOO HOO These are blogs with more then one thing to offer. REAL SUBSTANCE. Go check them out for some eye candy and a good read. :)

Art Exchange

The art exchange sounds fun to me! Basically what happens is you make something artsy. You get an address from me of someone to send it to ( and their blog address so you can get to know them first if you want ) and then you mail it to them. You find 6 people who want to play along and give them MY address. This way we all get fun things in the mail. I did this once before with Flip Flops. I didn't end up getting any in the mail but my sister got a pair or two. It is fun in theory if everyone plays along.

The "art" can be anything really. A photograph. A handmade card. Something you sew. Something you create. Jewelry you make. ANYTHING!

I would LOVE to see what I get in the mail. This is so cool sounding to me but I know it isn't for everyone. You SHOULD get 6 things in the mail because I am only doign this with people who WANT to do it. SO let me know. I think I have 3 people now...right? 3 more people. If anything, you will have a fun new blog to look at. The blog address I got was this one HERE I absolutely LOVE the blog and now subscribe. So all good things will come. 3 more spots people 3 MORE! Let me know.

HATS

I have never been a HUGE hat person. Lately I have been wanting a cute hat for when I am in the sun ( not that it is a lot! ) I found this tutorial a while ago and wanted to use it. I FINALLY got around to it. Go check it out HERE

It came out okay. It was REALLY easy but I made it a little to long on the sides. I am still thinking about fixing that but we'll see. So I took an old navy shirt that had a hole in the boob ( and not in a spot I could cover with a flower! It was RIGHT where my nipple was which was a total bummer. ) Any ways. Here are two pictures. I made two different accessories for it on brooch pins. The first picture is blurry sorry about that.

I might make one for Kayla. We'll see. :)

For tomorrow I have a tutorial! WOO HOO I hope I can get it up on here. I got lots of projects I am trying to work on all at once. Hopefully I can get it all done without going crazy.
